How Quit Lit Helped Me Quit Drinking

After World Book Day last week I got thinking about Quit Lit again – that little area of the bookshop that I did not even know existed until I quit drinking ……… and more importantly, what would I have done without it when I was giving up?

What a life saver, what a tool!!!!!

I cannot tell you how much Quit Lit has contributed to my sobriety and as an Alcohol-Free Coach I strongly recommend you use this as a tool.

This Naked Mind by Annie Grace was my first. I loved it. I have always had quite a scientific mind, a logical mind, I loved this book for that. It truly explained to me that it was the drink’s fault, not mine. I really started to understand my struggle and realise I was not to blame. I recommend this to everyone

And of course, Intoxicating Lies, you know by now this is our book club here in Our Circle, we love this. Meg Geisewite has a very special place in our heart, here in our home, our wee safe haven. For any woman giving up, read this. You will connect with Meg, she had us hanging off every word she wrote. This one made me feel seen, heard, understood. Most importantly, I realised I was not alone. This is such an important thing when we give up. It can be a lonely stroll into sobriety so to connect with others and know others feel the same is very validating.

DRINK? by David Nutt is a cracker, the politics, the sociology, the science. It is a true explanation of alcohol and its place in our society and all that goes on in government and Big Alcohol. Again, you start to understand that you are not at fault, you are fighting a losing battle against a great big, big machine. This one set me up for the fight I knew I had to dig deep to win. It really got my blood boiling, I felt like I did at the start of a race – ready, pumped and prepared to give it my all

I really would like to thank everyone who takes the time to write a book, to create the wonderful world of Quit Lit and help countless others in their alcohol-free story. It is such a powerful tool and you can use it and fit it in to your routine in whatever way works best for you.

I power-up on Quit-Lit on the plane heading out on holiday just in case my wee wine witch tries to romanticise about drinking at sunset. If you have a night-out to go on and you are worried about it, read a few pages in the afternoon – boost your alcohol-free battery and this will help you feel more prepared. Read on the bus to work, on the way home if you usually head straight to the fridge for the wine to help you “relax”.

When quitting alcohol it is important to immerse yourself in all things alcohol-free and that is exactly what Quit-Lit helps you do.

It is hands down one of the best support tools you will have on your Alcohol-Free story.

So, go and grab a book now and please do get in touch and let us know your favourites and why
