Is It Midlife… or Is It the Wine? The Truth About Alcohol and Your Hormones

For years, I believed wine was my wind-down.

A way to relax, unplug, and take the edge off after a long day.

And for a while, it felt like it worked.

But as I moved through my 30s and into my 40s, something changed.

I was more tired — even after a full night’s sleep.

My moods were unpredictable — snappy, tearful, anxious.

I’d lie awake at 2 AM, wide-eyed and wired.

And despite doing “all the right things,” I just didn’t feel like myself.

I blamed midlife. Hormones. Busy mum life.

But what I didn’t realise was this:

It wasn’t just my hormones acting up. It was the wine hijacking them.

How Alcohol Messes With Your Hormones

If you’re in perimenopause or beyond, your body is already doing the hard work of adjusting, recalibrating, and seeking balance. And alcohol throws a spanner in every part of that process.

Here’s what I’ve learned:

It disrupts your sleep – even if you fall asleep quickly, it fragments your rest and spikes cortisol at 3 AM.

It increases your stress hormone (cortisol) – keeping your nervous system in fight-or-flight mode.

It messes with oestrogen and progesterone – making mood swings, hot flushes, and anxiety worse.

It drains your energy, slows metabolism, and fogs your mind – making it harder to show up how you want to.

So if you’re feeling:

  • Moody and on edge
  • Exhausted but unable to rest
  • Mentally foggy, overwhelmed, or unlike yourself…

It might not be “just midlife.”

It might be the alcohol.

The Day I Stopped Numbing and Started Healing

When I removed alcohol, I didn’t just get my evenings back.

I got myself back.

My sleep deepened.

My moods steadied.

My anxiety quietened.

My energy returned.

And maybe most importantly — I felt in tune with my body again, instead of fighting against it.

You’re Not Broken — You’re Being Given a Signal

If you’re a midlife mum feeling like you’re just “getting through” the week, please know: you don’t have to accept survival mode as your new normal.

It’s not selfish to want to feel good.

It’s not “just hormones.”

And you’re not the problem.

There’s another way to live. A clearer, calmer, more energised way — where your body is supported, not suppressed. Where you feel like you again.
